With the expensive cost of home heating, many companies are coming up with domestic energy saving devices. They include things like the high efficiency furnace and high efficiency boiler which is designed to provide more efficient heating thus reducing unnecessary heating costs. While these devices can help make a difference, perhaps the biggest difference of all can be made by the homeowner themselves. There are a wide variety of simple strategies you can employ all over your home to reduce your heating costs.
First, go old fashioned. Use electric blankets and flannel pajamas to keep warm at night instead of cranking up the heat. If you've got guest rooms or storage rooms in your home that aren't being lived in, shut off the vents in those rooms and close the door. If you've got a basement, add extra insulation under the floor located above the basement. Another area where extra insulation is helpful is the attic. The insulation will prevent the cold air from these unheated areas from reaching your living space. Speaking of your living space, there are some small changes you can make in your living room to cut costs also.
Trade your sheer drapes for heavier ones, which will help insulate the room from the cold. Apply weatherstripping around windows and doors to seal cracks. One of the most decorative ways to keep cold air from seeping into your home is to use a plush draft stop. You will find them crafted in a variety of styles including Santa and snowmen. They are placed in front of the door and block the crack under the door so cold air cannot enter. If you want to keep things simple, use rolled towels instead.
Another strategy that works well in conjunction with domestic energy saving devices is the use of expansion foam under cabinets and in enclosed spaces where there are cracks or holes. Personally, I have used expansion foam under cabinets not only to block the cold but to block the entry of a particularly determined family of mice. Expansion foam is a nifty invention and something no household should be without. It can be purchased anywhere home improvement supplies are sold. If you have more questions about how to prepare your home for winter, the U.S. Department of Energy offers tips for consumers.
