It all comes down to smart energy management. The first step is performing a detailed inspection of your home to check for places where heat may be escaping. Many people don't realize just how many leaks they have around the house. Begin your inspection by checking around doors, windows, fireplaces and electrical outlets for leaks and cracks.

When leaks and cracks are found, seal them with caulk, weatherstripping or expansion foam. Expansion foam can also be used to seal up areas under cabinets where there may be small holes. Exhaust fans in bathrooms and above cooking ranges basically suck all the hot air out when in use, so use them only when necessary. Yet another simple strategy is to not heat rooms that are not in use. If you have spare rooms that aren't lived in, shut the vents and close the door.

Proper maintenance of heating appliances is important for efficient use. This means making sure filters are kept clean and changed when necessary. You should have your heating appliance inspected annually to make sure it is in proper working order. Another trick is to get a programmable thermostat. You can set the temperature you want and the heat will shut off when the desired temperature is reached. Don't set the thermostat for higher than necessary in an attempt to heat your home quickly, it doesn't work and costs you more money.

There are plenty of ways to get home heating oil price savings. By insulating your home, sealing up all your leaks and cracks, only heating the necessary spaces and not using fans, you can reduce your costs. You may also want to use a space heater in your home to reduce your dependency on oil heat. Space heaters are affordable and come in different varieties including convection and ceramic. Using a space heater in conjunction with your oil heat can potentially reduce your heating costs also.
