The HVAC Calc Residential 4.0 version allows you to size heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioners. Full instructions are included with the program. If you can use a tape measure, you can use this software program. While the contractor version costs $389 the residential version is only $49.
There are many other HVAC software programs that can be used to calculate the size of your HVAC elements. Some of these programs are designed for use by homeowners although the majority are for contractors to use in their business. If you are a homeowner looking for ways to save money on your heating costs, sizing your heating system correctly is only one part of the battle. You need to prepare your home for winter by sealing cracks around windows and doors and heating only the rooms in your home that you live in. Small steps like these can go a long way towards your energy efficiency.
When you combine HVAC system sizing software with money saving techniques like winterizing your home and heating only those areas of your home in which you live, you can slash heating costs. Because the cost of oil and gas has risen to a rate that many would deem expensive, many homeowners must take measures to make their heat as efficient as possible so they aren't paying a fortune during the wintertime. If you're worried about heating costs you might also want to join the budget program if your local heating provider offers one.
